The Field of Celebrant checkpoint
1646.35 kilometres into the Walk to Mordor challenge.
14 May, 2013.

The Field of Celebrant was where the fierce Easterlings known as the Balchoth waged open war against a weakened Gondor. With no allies left east of Anduin, Gondor sent the Red Arrow north to the Éothéod, their ancient allies.
When the battle seemed lost, the Éothéod (led by Eorl the Young) suddenly appeared, unexpected by friend or foe. The Éothéod crossed the Anduin at the Undeeps of the river, and broke on the rearguard of the Balchoth. The Balchoth were completely defeated and the Gondorian armies saved. The Éothéod continued their foray into northern Gondor, scattering and destroying all the Balchoth in Calenardhon.
After the battle, the Steward of Gondor gave the Éothéod the entire land of Calenardhon to dwell in as thanks. The Éothéod founded the Kingdom of Rohan there.

Gift-giving and leave Lothlórien checkpoint

1496.88 kilometres into the Walk to Mordor challenge.

21 April, 2013.

One day my wrist will be well enough for me to use a rowing machine for the Lothlórien to Rauros Falls leg. But it is not this day.

The peak of Cerin Amroth checkpoint
1458.06 kilometres into the Walk to Mordor challenge.
17 April, 2013.

The slopes of Cerin Amroth were grassy and covered with flowers - the golden elanor (a small, golden, star-shaped flower) and the pale niphredil (white flower with a pale green, slender stalk). On the summit of the hill were two circles of trees; the outer trees had white bark and the inner trees were the gold-leaved mallorn.

Cross Nimrodel checkpoint
1377.59 kilometres into the Walk to Mordor challenge.
31 March, 2013.

“Here is Nimrodel!” Said Legolas … One by one they climbed down and followed Legolas. For a moment Frodo stood near the brink and let the water flow over his tired feet. It was cold but its touch was clean, and as he went on and it mounted to his knees, he felt that the stain of travel and all weariness was washed from his limbs.

Stop to vent grief checkpoint

1351.84 kilometres into the Walk to Mordor challenge.

27 March, 2013.

My progress has slowed a little lately. I’ve stopped using the exercise bike while a rash on my leg is healing (seems like the fabric on some of my shorts was irritating my skin), so it’s just been my daily walking. And I haven’t been super active over the last week or two because uni assessment is starting to ramp up. But I’m now on mid-semester break, and my rash is healing pretty well. Looking forward to catching up on uni work and sleep over the next week or so.

Warg Attack! checkpoint
1252.06 kilometres into the Walk to Mordor challenge
13 March, 2013.

A group of Wargs crossed to the western side of the Misty Mountains and attacked the Fellowship. The Fellowship took refuge on a hilltop and fought the attacking Wargs. Gandalf set the ring of trees atop the hill on fire and Legolas slew their chieftain with a flaming arrow. The remaining Wargs fled into the night.
The next morning, there were no Warg carcasses to be found though the Fellowship had slain many in the night.

Redhorn Pass checkpoint

1206.99 kilometres into the Walk to Mordor challenge.

10 March, 2013.

Caradhras, also called the Redhorn, was one of the three Mountains of Moria under which the great Dwarf palace of Khazad-dûm was built.

Caradhras was the only site in Middle-earth where mithril could be found.  Unfortunately, mithril miners also found the Balrog of Moria, and awakened him in the roots of the mountain.

Hollin Ridge checkpoint

1110.43 kilometres into the Walk to Mordor challenge.

6 March, 2013.

Last year this 360.49 kilometre leg took me seven weeks. Starting back at uni and having the exercise bike means that I was able to tackle this in a little under three weeks. I love that it takes, like, a minute for the Fellowship to get to Hollin Ridge when it’s the longest leg in the entire journey.

Hollin Ridge was a western outlier of the Misty Mountains roughly halfway between the Bruinen and the Sirannon … The ridge was low, topped by ancient holly-trees, and marked the northern border of the long-lost Elven kingdom of Eregion (also known as Hollin).
